Sophie Calkins

Sophie grew up in Western Massachusetts where she began her dance training at Pioneer Valley Ballet under the direction of Maryanne Kodzis and Thomas Vacanti. She later trained at the School for Contemporary Dance & Thought as well, where she explored contemporary, improvisational, and compositional dance practices. Sophie supplemented her training through summer intensives with American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Charlotte Ballet, and the Martha Graham School. She is currently working toward a BFA in Ballet Pedagogy from the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. While pursuing her degree, Sophie has performed repertory by Martha Graham, Marius Petipa, Debra Ryder, and Ralph Perkins. In addition to her studies in dance performance and pedagogy, Sophie has developed an interest in kinesiology, somatic practice, and injury prevention and completed the Polestar® Pilates comprehensive teacher training in 2026. Sophie’s Pilates classes utilize a positive and playful approach while challenging mobility and strength in all planes of the body to find functional movement efficiency and deepen body awareness.
