Presenting new ballets by up-and-coming choreographers, including this year's recipient of our Emerging Choreographer Comission, Ballet Unbound will captivate you with a wide range of dance styles and creative elements.
MEET THE CHOREOGRAPHERS
WILL SMITH
Born in Camden New York, Will Smith received a pass with Merit
from The R.A.D syllabus under Delia Foley. He then attended the
University of Missouri- Kansas City on a talent scholarship and danced
in Kansas CIty Youth Ballet. He has danced Professionally with Albany
Berkshire Ballet, Montgomery Ballet, Richmond Ballet, Ballet Theatre
of Maryland, Manassas Ballet, and after 10 years at Roanoke Ballet as
a principal dancer he retired in 2023 under Artistic Director Rolando
Sarabia.
Will started Choreographing professionally in 2013 and has
produced works on Manassas Ballet, Roanoke Ballet, Southern
Appalachian Dance Collective and Ballet 314. He has won the Virginia
Choreographic fellowship, Roanoke Year of the artist Grant and Roanoke
Community arts grants. His production of "Lark Ascending", a ballet
designed for deaf audiences has been highlighted in Dance Magazine.
Will is Currently The Ballet Master for Southern Appalachian
Dance Collective, teaches for Star City Ballet and is a guest teacher
for Charlottesville Ballet's Professional Company. He is Also a
Certified Arborist when he's not in the studio you can find him in the
trees as The Dancing Lumberjack.
TYLER SCHNESE
Recipient of the Emerging Choreographer Comission
Tyler Schnese (he/they) is an Assistant Professor of Ballet at Utah Valley University. Tyler performed as a Soloist with Hessisches Staatsballett in Germany and later with Gibney Dance Company in New York City, dancing works by leading contemporary and classical choreographers. In 2016, they were nominated for the German Stage Prize (Der Faust) for their portrayal of the title role in Kaspar Hauser.
Their choreography and movement direction span concert dance, film, and music projects, and they were the winner of Repertory Dance Theatre’s Regalia choreography competition. Their research centers on queer theory and ballet pedagogy, with a focus on expanding queer representation in ballet and challenging binary gender frameworks in training and performance.
