Synopsis:
Pictures at an Exhibition is an original ballet choreographed by Artistic Director Rachael Gnatowski. Set to the iconic score by Modest Mussorgsky with additional music by César Cui, this full-length ballet celebrates three contrasting pieces of art in three short acts. The first act is inspired by the lithograph Homage to Martha Graham by Paul Jenkins; the second act features characters based on The Three Graces marble sculpture by Antonio Canova; and the final act is a tribute to the ballerinas of Edgar Degas.
Our story, set in modern day Connecticut, follows a young girl named Natalie during a school field trip to a local art museum. She is an imaginative child who is prone to daydreams that often get her in trouble with her school teacher. As her class tours the museum, Natalie gets separated from the group and caught up in her imaginings. She envisions herself within the works of art, and is delighted to meet and dance with them as they come to life around her. She cannot stay in her daydream forever, and in the end, rejoins her classmates, knowing that her memories of this trip will always be with her to inspire her life.
This ballet's sweet story, lively dancing, and fanciful costumes have something for the whole family to enjoy. New arts audiences and avid fans of classical ballet or modern art and everything in between can all find enchantment in this eclectic original ballet.
